Florence Nightingale used statistics in her report "Notes on the Health, Efficiency and Hospital Administration of the British Army," 1858. The statistical charts she compiled, were referred to as her 'coxcombs' was and show the predominance of disease as a cause of mortality in the British Army during the Crimean War. Nightingale's work using statistics lead to her become the first woman Fellow of the Statistical Society in 1860.
